Artist Statement — Cliff Speaks

Cliff Speaks arrived at painting by way of graphic design, a foundation that continues to shape his visual language. That background serves as a bridge—translating the sensory experience of sound into the visual realm. Through deliberate use of line, form, and composition, all guided under the umbrella of color, Cliff constructs paintings that echo the structures of music itself: syncopation, rhythm, melody, harmony, chord, and scale.

His work dissolves the boundaries between disciplines. Instruments, instrumentalists, and music do not simply appear as subjects—they merge into unified compositions that seem to vibrate with energy. Each piece is designed to “sound” through the eye, offering viewers a visual equivalent of musical experience, where color becomes tone and form becomes movement.

Cliff says, “I am especially attracted to music because it moves through you—it’s emotional, physical, and immediate. I try to capture that same feeling visually.” This pursuit drives his work: to create images that don’t just depict music, but embody it—graphic, edgy, stylistic, and attention-grabbing expressions of sound translated into sight.
